Rodents can access Geelong homes internally, your wall cavities and roof spaces. Mice can squeeze through holes small as 5mm, while rats can enter through 10mm holes. Signs of a rodent infestation are scratching noises in the roof or walls, especially at night, chew marks on cereal boxes and even walls, droppings, urine stains, and grease rub marks where they walk.
Certain areas of Geelong exhibit greater rodent activity than others. For example, the Eastern Beach area in Geelong is prone to higher rat populations, likely due to its coastal location. Likewise, in Geelong and Geelong West, properties situated near train stations and railway lines tend to have increased rodent presence. Additionally, living next to parks, schools, rivers such as the Barwon River in Fyansford, Victoria, or in proximity to neighbors who keep chickens can also contribute to higher local rodent populations due to readily available feed.

They have a shorter lifespan of 9-12 months and are highly prolific, with females capable of producing 4-5 litters per year, averaging 6-8 pups each. Sexual maturity is reached quickly, at 3-4 months, and the gestation period is a mere 21 days.

These adaptable rodents have a diverse diet, feeding on cereals, grains, fruits, and virtually any food source with nutritional value.
