 The roof rat (Rattus rattus), also known as the ship rat or black rat, is a smaller rodent than the common Norway rat. They have a shorter lifespan of 9-12 months and are highly prolific, with females capable of producing 4-5 litters per year, averaging 6-8 pups each. Sexual maturity is reached quickly, at 3-4 months, and the gestation period is a mere 21 days.

Roof rats are typically found in urban environments or near coastal areas. Their excellent climbing skills allow them to access and nest in buildings, attics, and even ships. These adaptable rodents have a diverse diet, feeding on cereals, grains, fruits, and virtually any food source with nutritional value. Their omnivorous nature extends to insects and meat, which they consume when necessary.
