Mosquito Control

Mosquitoes thrive in stagnant water sources, making them unwelcome guests around our homes. Here’s the breakdown on their preferred breeding grounds and how they multiply:

Mosquito Breeding Areas:

Anything that holds water: Mosquitoes aren’t picky. They’ll lay eggs in almost any container that holds water for a week or more, including:

• Discarded tires
• Buckets
• Plant saucers
• Clogged gutters
• Birdbaths (if not changed regularly)
• Ponds (without mosquito fish)
• In some cases, even tree holes or the space within bromeliad plants
  Life Cycle:

Mosquitoes go through a complete metamorphosis with four distinct stages:

Egg: The female mosquito lays eggs on or near water, often attaching them to the water’s edge or the underside of objects. The eggs can survive dry conditions for weeks or months, waiting for flooding to hatch.

Larva (wriggler): When submerged in water, the eggs hatch into larvae, aquatic creatures that look like tiny worms. They feed on microorganisms in the water and breathe through a siphon at the water’s surface. Larvae go through four molting stages before reaching the next stage.

Pupa (tumbler): After the final larval molt, the pupa forms. Pupae are comma-shaped and don’t feed, but they are mobile and can wriggle around in the water. They breathe air through a trumpet at the water’s surface.

Adult: Finally, the adult mosquito emerges from the pupal case. They rest on the water’s surface for a short time to dry their wings before taking flight. Only female mosquitoes bite, needing a blood meal to develop their eggs.

The Whole Cycle:

The entire mosquito life cycle, from egg to adult, can take anywhere from 7 to 14 days, depending on water temperature and other environmental factors. This rapid breeding cycle is why it’s important to eliminate mosquito breeding sites around your home.
